LANGUAGE MAGICIAN, A EUROPEAN LANGUAGES PROJECT.

An assessment tool in the form of a computer game for learning foreign languages at primary school level.

Ten partners from four European countries have built a Strategic Partnership in order to support the learning and teaching of foreign languages at primary school level. One of the main aims is to develop a computer game that can be used as an assessment tool in schools called “The Language Magician”. It gave the project its name. The game is fun for the children, build on their language and IT-skills and provide information on their progression. It supports teachers by giving them a tool to assess their pupils’ abilities using non-threatening testing methods.

The National Curriculum in England requires pupils and teachers to focus on making “substantial progress in at least one modern or ancient foreign language”. Pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study, but schools are invited to use their own systems to demonstrate how well learners have achieved this. So the main concern is about comparatively and consistency.

So, Language Magician is a more standardised diagnostic tool which let us measure the foreign language competency level of pupils in primary schools through an attractive and fun computer game.

The game allows pupils to proceed through different language levels based on increasingly complex linguistic demands, also it helps teachers gathering data about their students achievements with content based on learning standards (reading comprehension, writing and listening) across Europe.

Click here to access to the Language Magician website and click on the green button on the Home Page ‘Register / set up game’ and the click on ‘Teacher Dashboard’ and follow the instructions.

My students love it!
