HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN SUPPORT LEARNING AND RETENTION OF VOCABULARY

Actualizado: 7 feb 2020

The result of some studies show the critical role vocabulary acquisition plays in the student´s ability to communicate effectively (Barcroft 2004).

On the other hand the Languages Programmes of Study for KS2 (National Curriculum in England) says that “Pupils should be taught to broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced”, also in the new MFL GCSE specifications students are expected to be able to “make appropriate and accurate use of a variety of vocabulary”… and “use and demonstrate a wide range of of vocabulary”…

Needless to say that repetition plays a fundamental role on vocabulary learning, and technology can help teachers making this vocabulary learning more motivating and engaging for our students.

- Connecting fun and learning with online vocabulary games.

- Taking advantage of online dictionaries and language translators.

- Having students use media (video and audio) to express vocabulary knowledge.

- Learning from visual displays.

- Giving students opportunities to review vocabulary regularly wherever they are.
